This is an incredible tome of power." —John Romero, co-creator of DOOM “This is a time machine. Poring over these images forty years after I first held the Basic Set in my hands, I’m overwhelmed by the same ineffable feelings I had back in 1977.  DUNGEONS & DRAGONS unlocked something in my twelve year old brain—an exhilarating sense of possibility—that set my future course as a game designer and writer. This book inspires me all over again" —Amy Hennig, creator of the Uncharted series“This fascinating deep dive into the world of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS will thrill both the connoisseur of role-playing games, as well as anyone interested in visual histories. Book is fabulous. Dissapointed in the extras in the Special Edition. The book is amazing. A complete history of all that is D&D, from it's beginning to today. They have some amazing pics in here. For the long-time D&D fan, this is THE book to own.I have been a HUGE D&D fan almost since the beginning. Growing up in WI, it was always a point of pride that TSR was an hour drive from my house, and GenCon was always "local" to me. When I first saw this book available for pre-order, I put in for my copy. Then the Special Edition was offered, and I changed my order. Now that I have it, I absolutely love the book, and the box is very cool. But the "extras"? Meh.The booklet for Tomb of Horror is really nice for anyone who has played through the original module (and remembers how rough it was). but the "10 poster size prints?" Are you kidding me. 4 8x10, 4 10x16, 1 14x18 and 1 16x24. I'd barely call the 16x24 a "poster", and the rest? Bah.Anyway, I am personally disappointed in the extras. I think the better buy is the book itself, for less than 50% of the price of the Special Edition.Roll a constitution check to stay up and enjoy this Very excellent book! The bonus art/posters have small text bits in the corner that catalogs what the piece is and of what year, the pamphlet features many excellent ideas and nostalgic art (ending with a blurb about a certain sphere that one should avoid touching), and the book is packed with fantastic content between its beautiful cover. (I especially like the book preparing you with a nice blurb from one of our favorite of Jocks Machina, Joe M/Arkhan.) Though the front cover features a beautiful dragon design from Hydra, be sure to check out the other side for something I did not expect for an art back, but found that's what made it perfect! (Spoiler for those who may not be able to give this much cash: It was a mimic!)Whether you buy this or the standard version, you will not be disappointed. I hope you all enjoy this thick tome of knowledge and know the weight behind this fantastic franchise!Terrific book, satisfying special edition Your hands glide across the black embossed cover, its surface smooth but with the slightest tug against your skin. Brilliant gold flashes from the terrifying visage embossed on its front. Slowly, carefully, you lift up the cover to reveal the inside your beautiful special edition. Nestled smugly together with a coterie of prints and a devious convention edition of the Wizard Xagyg' Tomb of Horrors lies what you have long sought.Art & ArcanaA tome worthy of song. Of tribute. Of legend.*** *** ***This is book is a trophy piece. Covered in illustration, wickedly dense with history, and beautifully produced. Despite owning their page limit the authors managed to cram decades worth of wonder, triumph, tears, and rebirth into a single book that somehow manages to capture it all (or close enough!) Every time I wondered if they'd cover something, there it was. What about a page on how Todd Lockwood's dragons from 3rd Edition are the BEST? Two-page spread. What about the Heavy Metal line of miniatures? How about a sequence of the covers of D&D's core books through the ages? Yup. But organized unlike me.If you love D&D buy this book. If you love D&D art buy this book. If you love D&D history buy this book. If you don't, then go try out D&D and then buy this book!
