Title: The Spy and the Traitor Pdf The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War

New York Times Best Seller

"The best true spy story I have ever read." (John Le Carre)

The celebrated author of Double Cross and Rogue Heroes returns with his greatest spy story yet, a thrilling Americans-era tale of Oleg Gordievsky, the Russian whose secret work helped hasten the end of the Cold War.

If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6. For nearly a decade, as the Cold War reached its twilight, Gordievsky helped the West turn the tables on the KGB, exposing Russian spies and helping to foil countless intelligence plots, as the Soviet leadership grew increasingly paranoid at the United States's nuclear first-strike capabilities and brought the world closer to the brink of war. Desperate to keep the circle of trust close, MI6 never revealed Gordievsky's name to its counterparts in the CIA, which in turn grew obsessed with figuring out the identity of Britain's obviously top-level source. Their obsession ultimately doomed Gordievsky: the CIA officer assigned to identify him was none other than Aldrich Ames, the man who would become infamous for secretly spying for the Soviets.

Unfolding the delicious three-way gamesmanship between America, Britain, and the Soviet Union, and culminating in the gripping cinematic beat-by-beat of Gordievsky's nail-biting escape from Moscow in 1985, Ben Macintyre's latest may be his best yet. Like the greatest novels of John le Carré, it brings listeners deep into a world of treachery and betrayal, where the lines bleed between the personal and the professional, and one man's hatred of communism had the power to change the future of nations.

Ben Macintyre - the LeCarre of Non-Fiction I thought I had read all the important main books on the Cold War, but Ben Macintyre comes through and gives us a true life narrative of one of the West's greatest heroes - Oleg Gordievsky. A man who helped, particularly the UK, inform the goings on of the KGB and all the Boris and Natasha's and helped hasten the end of that nasty politik. This would be best read in the autumn on a train in the UK. Knowing that something good came out of all this, after all. Ben Macintyre probably will be sitting behind you. He has your back covered.Outstanding, interesting read; masterfully told story It is rare that any book keeps my interest through the entire story, but this is one of them. Because the story is true, it is better than even the best spy novel with made up characters and plot contrivances. Here everything was real and in many instances Oleg's life depended on decisions made by his handlers. The real-life spy dramas are one of my favorite genres. By the end of the book, I really felt sorry for Oleg's wife and daughters, who through no fault of their own, ended up in a nightmare when Oleg left them behind in Russia only to be retrieved 6 years later with disastrous results.I'll be reading A Spy Among Friends next, which I hear is even better.Splendid history & a gripping read The Spy and The Traitor is touted in its subhead as "the greatest espionage story ever told." That isn't just publisher hype. The real events and the story of Oleg Gordievsky, KGB officer and diplomat reads like something from a John LeCarre or Robert Ludlum story...except it's true and marvelously documented. Raised by a father and older brother who both served devotedly and unquestioningly in the KGB (dad worked through Stalin's purges and survived in the KGB's precursor agency). Loyalty to the service then would seem to be a given--betraying the agency and its million members (you read that right) would be like sabotaging the family's business. Yet events and history continue to flummox human expectations.First the invasion of Hungary, then the erection of the Berlin Wall (which Gordievsky was present to see) and finally the brutal crushing of the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia all drove this KGB officer further and further away from the party. Exposure to the West in Copenhagen and later in London provided a first hand taste of liberty and freedom. It served as the final push into the eager and eternally grateful arms of his M16 handlers. The double agent provided them with not merely a trove of concrete information but invaluable insight into the workings of the KGB and planning of the Soviet Leadership. It is no exaggeration to say Gordievsky was our Kim Philby. The details of these meetings, contacts, "drops", etc. and how spies operated from the end WWII until the dissolution of the Soviet empire is fascinating and novelistic in the telling. Gordievsky's escape or "exfiltration" from the USSR by M16 is nothing short of breathtaking--a Bourne Identity moment.Best of all though is the historical and moral context that gives readers a perspective of events' meanings. Ben McIntyre is a masterful storyteller and detailed chronicler. He thoroughly but concisely points out the import and value of Grodievsky's insights--particularly warning the Brits and thereby the Americans that the Soviet leader Yuri Andropov genuinely believed the West was intent upon a first nuclear strike. Appreciating that paranoia can be as perilous as animus, first Thatcher and then Reagan worked to assuage Soviet fears. It was Gordievsky who prepped both sides for successful summits in the 80s and it was he who counseled wisely to neither disband nor include the USSR in the SDI or Star Wars initiative. Rather, ratchet up the pressure and they would go bankrupt trying to keep up, which is precisely what happened.Gordievsky certainly didn't single handedly end the cold war--there were dozens of events and officials who played a significant role. But Oleg Gordievsky was surely in the first rank of those who made a valuable contribution earning the appreciation of Reagan, Thatcher, the CIA, M16 and yes, QEII (the monarch, not the ocean liner). Best of all, McIntryre doesn't put a patriotic gloss on his subject's behavior. What Gordievsky did was of enormous benefit to democracy and the West but it destroyed his marriage, implicated his wife and children as well as family and friends who all paid some price for his defection. In short, his actions both saved and ruined lives and the choices he made can be rightfully regarded as both morally defensible and appalling or enraging to those who knew him. Unsurprisingly, his marriage failed and most Russian friends regard him with disdain and disgust. In the western intelligence community he is a hero. This is terrific, important history and a wonderfully well-told tale. Enjoy!

Featuring:
Crossroads of Twilight
Knife of Dreams
The Gathering Storm

Four Stars Confusing series but still enjoyable.Need the next set!!!! Burn through these too quickly. Can't put them down. Already ordering the next set. Be sad when the series ends...Great Read! Have the complete series and have really enjoyed reading them. What inspired me to try this series is that I've read and loved Brandon Sanderson's other series. When searching for more of his books, I ran across this series. I figured if he liked Robert Jordan's writing so much that he would finish writing this series for the original author, then it was worth a try. I'm very glad I picked it up! Highly recommend this series.

Just when you thought you didn't have time, Liz helps you make it! A staple in our home for almost a year has been Liz’s, “The One-Pot Ketogenic Diet Cookbook”. Without this, I wouldn’t have gotten the idea for many of the fast and delicious foods that my family enjoys. Although my family is not 100% keto, or even 50%, they know dinner will be keto and it’ll be delicious. When Liz’s new cookbook, “Keto Meal Prep”, was introduced, I was SO READY! I have a keto meal plan that I’ve purchased; however, after a mini-stroke, I found it incredibly difficult to make a list of items I needed from this meal plan without getting lost on what was needed on what day and not buying things too far in advance and so on. I left something off, always – or bought too much of something and started a stockpile in my freezer. Here are my favorite things about this new meal prep book!1. Great list of items to enjoy while on keto and why or if it should be in moderation.2. List of foods to limit and why. Being told why, helps you rationalize WAY more why it’s limited.3. Keto flu symptoms and how to avoid it. For some, it just happens. I’ve been lucky and never had it.4. Basic meal prep principals. We all hear how awesome meal prep is but if you’re busy, you still think it’s just not an option. Liz helps you realize, it really is, and it’ll help you stay on track!5. Intermittent fasting is explained in the simplest of ways – maybe it’s right for you.6. “The Art of Storage” – you never knew this was really a big deal, but I now know it is if I want my food to last! The food storage chart was incredibly helpful. I NEVER knew that cooked meats could last so long. I’ve been throwing away items WAY too soon!7. Meal prep lifestyles – What is this? Well – whether you’re a beginner or advanced and just want to maintain, she’s made it easy for you and customized it without you whipping your HSA card out.8. Weekly layout – This my friends is where the glory lives. I cannot put into words how incredibly helpful these pages are.a. Shopping list for the week, sorted by produce, protein, dairy and pantry. Woman after my own heart! My heart fluttered; my OCD smiled, and I KNEW this was going to be easy.b. Step by step prep – condensed into a couple pages and NOT overwhelming!c. Daily menu in a snapshot – this helps me know what I need to change IF I want to OR tells my kids what they’re going to be having for the week. For my family, I still make the dinners but add a pork chop or other protein for them, so they feel fuller. Personally, I DO feel full because I’ve been eating different than them for the day.9. Customization with each meal. Liz gives you the freedom to be creative and add a few more ingredients for taste. I like this because I don’t feel like it’s a take it or leave it menu.10. DAIRY FREE OPTIONS!! You read right. For each meal, you have the option to be dairy free. For many, lactose intolerance and keto are hard. Everything has cheese – cheese is life after all! Liz gives you a replacement item for your dairy, so you still have a thickener in place of a dairy item. (my personal experience is that it’s usually a thickener but don’t take that as gospel)11. Macro listings – Liz makes it easy to know what you’re eating for the day without tracking everything in an app the exhaustive and manual way. You already know for each meal what your macros will be and what your daily intake is going to be.12. Ingredient and cooking tips – Liz tells you some tips for ingredients you may want to add that she loves to add or some cooking tips to make your food more flavorful in the long run.13. Staples and bonus recipes– So this sounds weird, but this section of the cookbook is just…BEYOND one of my favorite.a. Avocado lime dressing – what an awesome side item. This is something I put on everything. It’s SO good over deviled eggs. I LOVE the flavor.b. Dairy free ranch – YES PLEASE! Although since being on keto I’m far less lactose intolerant, sometimes I just don’t want to chance it.c. Caesar dressing – my daughter is a sucker for Caesar anything and she LOVES this dressing in the biggest way!d. Fat coffee – don’t feel obligated to have this but if you do, the ground cinnamon is a game changer. MCT oil and I don’t get along but the rest of it helps to get it on down. 8 oz isn’t that much either.e. Breakfasts – I use this for quick things to make on the weekends sometimes. Now with an instantpot, omelet muffins are easy, and the kids can do it.14. Lunch and dinners – these are QUICK people and I rely on these for days I come home and don’t feel well or it’s late and my family has so sweetly waited for me to cook…15. Vegetables and snacks – you can read this section but let me jump to a few of my favorite itemsa. Coconut chocolate mousseb. Blended strawberry coconut ice popsc. Caprese chopped salad – I could live on this stuff! My take away from this book is this – no matter how much time you think you don’t have, this guide makes it possible for you to have time. Recipes are simple, quick and delicious. It’s so well laid out, not confusing and visually puts you at ease. When I first saw it, I thought, “Oh wow, I can do this”, and I did. I used to feel overwhelmed with other meal preps because you don’t get it drilled down like this. In this format, it’s easy to be successful. HUGE kudos for Liz in writing another incredible tool for keto’ers of all styles!Surprised at poor structure and editing New to Keto and wanted help to kickoff the journey. Made week one yesterday, went shopping and followed the shopping list. Well the shopping list did not have avocado on it which is part of the burger meal. It had two dozen eggs but recipes have you make more. Does not mention needing to adjust recipes to make only what is needed for the week meal prep. And the first week the net carbs on day one are 33 which was higher than I expected. I will keep at it and maybe come back and update this with what I hope is a better review.Great for keto beginers I need help getting started and this may just be what I need! Read the whole thing and I'm ready to start! Thanks
