Title: Debt - Updated and Expanded Pdf The First 5,000 Years
Author: David Graeber
Published Date: 2014
Page: 542

Winner of the Bateson Book Prize awarded by the Society for Cultural Anthropology“One of the year’s most influential books. Graeber situates the emergence of credit within the rise of class society, the destruction of societies based on ‘webs of mutual commitment’ and the constantly implied threat of physical violence that lies behind all social relations based on money.” —Paul Mason, THE GUARDIAN  “The book is more readable and entertaining than I can indicate... It is a meditation on debt, tribute, gifts, religion and the false history of money. Graeber is a scholarly researcher, an activist and a public intellectual. His field is the whole history of social and economic transactions.” —Peter Carey, THE OBSERVER"An alternate history of the rise of money and markets, a sprawling, erudite, provocative work."—Drake Bennett, BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK"[A]n engaging book. Part anthropological history and part provocative political argument, it's a useful corrective to what passes for contemporary conversation about debt and the economy."—Jesse Singal, BOSTON GLOBE "Fresh... fascinating... Graeber’s book is not just thought-provoking, but also exceedingly timely."—Gillian Tett, FINANCIAL TIMES (London)"Remarkable."—Giles Fraser, BBC RADIO 4"Terrific... In the best anthropological tradition, he helps us reset our everyday ideas by exploring history and other civilizations, then boomeranging back to render our own world strange, and more open to change."—Raj Patel, THE GLOBE AND MAIL"An amazing debut – conversational, pugnacious, propulsive"—TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION (UK)"Graeber's book has forced me to completely reevaluate my position on human economics, its history, and its branches of thought. A Marxism without Graeber's anthropology is beginning to feel meaningless to me."—Charles Mudede, THE STRANGER"The world of borrowing needs a little demystification, and David Graeber's Debt is a good start."—THE L MAGAZINE"Controversial and thought-provoking, an excellent book."—BOOKLIST"This timely and accessible book would appeal to any reader interested in the past and present culture surrounding debt, as well as broad-minded economists."—LIBRARY JOURNALPraise for David Graeber“I consider him the best anthropological theorist of his generation from anywhere in the world.”—Maurice Bloch, Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics "A brilliant, deeply original political thinker."—Rebecca Solnit, author of A Paradise Built in Hell“If anthropology consists of making the apparently wild thought of others logically compelling in their own cultural settings and intellectually revealing of the human condition, then David Graeber is the consummate anthropologist. Not only does he accomplish this profound feat, he redoubles it by the critical task—now more urgent than ever—of making the possibilities of other people’s worlds the basis for understanding our own.” —Marshall Sahlins, Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago David Graeber teaches anthropology at the London School of Economics. He has written for Harper’s, The Nation, Mute, and The New Left Review. In 2006, he delivered the Malinowski Memorial Lecture at the London School of Economics, an annual talk that honors “outstanding anthropologists who have fundamentally shaped the study of culture.” One of the original organizers of Occupy Wall Street, Graeber has been called an “anti-leader of the movement” by Bloomberg Businessweek. The Atlantic wrote that he “has come to represent the Occupy Wall Street message...expressing the group’s theory, and its founding principles, in a way that truly elucidated some of the things people have questioned about it.”

Now in paperback, the updated and expanded edition : David Graeber’s “fresh . . . fascinating . . . thought-provoking . . . and exceedingly timely” (Financial Times) history of debt

Here anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: he shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods—that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Graeber shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from Italy to China, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections. He also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancient works of law and religion (words like “guilt,” “sin,” and “redemption”) derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong. We are still fighting these battles today without knowing it.

Disappointing, weak, do not waste money and time on I was really disappointed in this book. It came recommended from a friend and I was hoping for some new ideas or insights around money and economics. It really is just a nonsensical ramble of which I was not able to eke out much. This review is the least I can do to warn others to not repeat my money and time waste. The author spends a lot of time at the beginning critiquing the "myth" of barter (that two paragraph parable at the beginning of 8th grade economics manuals - of how people would try to barter and thus discover it would be easier to use money). He builds this two paragraph parable into a huge straw-man, calling it the "founding myth of economics" which he proceeds to attack. That's his attempt to take down the discipline of economics (pls. note I am not calling it a science). That's like taking down anatomy because the anatomy drawings in the 6th grade manual are not accurate. The barter parable is meant to illustrate that any transactions (barter, credit, taxes etc) are nearly impossible without a universal unit of measure for value exchanged. Which is money. The parable uses the example of barter for a transaction because it is much easier for 8th graders to imagine that rather than more complicated transactions such as credit and taxes. He argues that anthropologists found no societies without money in which significant volumes of barter exists. Of course they did not. Without money it is impossible to keep track of the price of everything against everything. Which is the point the barter parable is trying to make in a simplistic way.Next the author argues that money is tied to credit transactions (including taxes) and that credit and money are really like the chicken and the egg. Of course they are. Credit transactions are exchanges of value with a time lag. Without a way to quantify the value exchanged they are nearly impossible to make (just like barter). And of course money is not coins. Coins are just symbols for money just like bank notes. The radical idea found by the author is that exchanges of value (trading goods, trading value in time as in credit, paying taxes) are impossible without a way to measure that value. Which btw. is exactly what the economists' parable of barter is trying to say too.All of this is peppered with random anthropological accounts, quotes from Nietzsche, quotes from some french economists about our primordial debt to gods, cries that our lives have become a "series of commercial transactions", and nonsensical expressions such as "bourgeois assumptions" (really? bourgeois?).The intent is to argue that money was involved in almost everything bad people did to each other through history and therefore there's something mysterious and bad about money (debt = money = slavery = capitalism = bad, or something like that). But wooden sticks, metals, clothes, and pretty much everything else including language were also involved in pretty much everything bad some people did to some other. So why single out money? Because it is an abstract concept, and abstract and invisible things draw weak minds like candles draw moths.Ever wonder why loonies come up with perpetual motion machines involving electricity and magnetism a lot more often than involving mechanics or thermodynamics? For the same reason - electricity and magnetism, just like money, are invisible and mysterious. Easier to make up fantasies about. Now I understand! Reading this book has given me an understanding of world history at a level I have never reached before. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in world history. At the same as reading this book, I was also reading books by Fools Crow, Crow Dog and Bear Heart. Each of these authors describe how the Federal Government set out to use debt to subjugate and eradicate Native Americans just as described in Graeber's book.

ISBN: B07CKXV7R6
Title: Blood for Blood (Ziba MacKenzie Book 1) Pdf

Ziba Mackenzie profiles killers. Now one is profiling her.

Rush hour, London. A packed commuter train is torn apart in a collision. Picking through the carnage, ex-special forces profiler Ziba MacKenzie helps a dying woman who passes on a cryptic message: He did it. You have to tell someone.

When a corpse is found bearing the gruesome signature of a serial killer dormant for twenty-five years, Ziba is pulled into the hunt for the perpetrator. As the body count rises it becomes clear he’s on a new spree. But what’s brought the London Lacerator back after such a long hiatus? And does his sudden return have anything to do with the woman on the train?

Ziba scrambles to profile the killer in the hope of predicting his next move. But time is running out. And the closer she gets to uncovering his identity, the closer he gets to destroying hers.

Shortlisted for the CWA Debut Dagger Award

I'm Sorry, But, No This was my Amazon First Read pick for January. It's not a book I'd recommend, and it's not a series I'll follow. Some things that bothered me include:Ziba is an annoying character who tries too hard to be a badass. She has a habit of calling people ridiculous derogatory names, constantly, such as "moon chicken" and "DI Dipstick." She also uses her personal lingo for common things, such as "lifer juice" instead of coffee. And a man's hands are "dick grabbers." I swear, she never just talks like a normal person. All this makes her unsympathetic and unlikable.Ziba lectures about serial killers at every turn. We're besieged with textbook recitations of infamous serial killers' behavior, as if in doing so Ziba proves her brilliance as a profiler. She also provides a litany of observations about people she sees, again to prove her profiling ability, when in reality most anyone would pick up on the things she points out with a flourish. There is a constant, obvious attempt to throw readers off with red herrings. It's as if the author shouts for us to look over here at this person, because it must be him, and then, no, look over here, because it's really this guy instead. It all feels too contrived.Clearly, this book was not for me. I couldn't find anything to like here at all. But that's just my opinion.Starts out a little slow and clumsy I am glad I kept going. The beginning of the book felt like a writing class exercise. Then there was the oddity of two people reading the same article in a newspaper. And how would the other know that? Then a mistake that a person sitting in a rear facing seat sees what the train is about to hit. (That's not s spoiler.) The Catholic lady repeats the same message from before but Ziba has no idea what she is talking about, but she did before? Anyway, all of these things seemed to me like an editor asleep at the wheel for the first few chapters. It was hard for me to get past these things and awkward writing. I tried to think of the awkward choppy writing as being an effect of the action. It is worth ignoring things and sticking to the larger story. Ziba is an interesting character. The story is intriguing.I couldn't get into it at first.. I almost didn't finish this First Reads pick for January, and that would have been a shame. But the phrasing was awkward, and I couldn't get into the characters. I persevered though, and I'm glad I did.Ziba MacKenzie is an ex-special forces operative turned profiler. She's also a recent widow in a world of pain. When the train she's traveling on is in a horrific accident she inadvertently catches the attention of a serial killer who has been dormant for years, but he's ready to start killing again. Results: admittedly the awkward and sometimes strange phrasing is difficult to get past, but if you can get through the first five chapters you'll find an interesting and exciting thriller. There was some strong language, and some adult themes, but nothing very graphic. It would be fine for older teens and adults.

Title: Of Knights and Dogfights Pdf A WWII Novel
*** Finalist of the 13th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards in the Military Fiction category ***

“Has it ever occurred to you, Johann; the fact that we’re fighting on the wrong side?”

Austria, 1938

On the verge of the most devastating war of all times, four young men found themselves sharing a room in a flying school dormitory. A bohemian Berliner, a Flieger-Hitlerjugend member, a prodigy pilot, and a butcher’s son, with nothing in common but their love for the Luftwaffe and the freedom the sky has to offer. The bond they develop is put to the test by what might be a stronger adversary - war itself. Over the English Channel, in the dusty skies of Africa, on the brutal Eastern front, they will discover where their loyalty lies, and what true bravery means.

“It’s Großdeutsches Reich, soldier. When one has a family at home, it doesn’t leave him many chances for the revolt.”

As the war progresses, Willi and Johann grow more and more disillusioned with the regime they’re protecting with their lives. An SS unit appearing on their base to claim one of their own; bits of conversation revealing the truth about the extermination program accidentally overheard during the official reception - the pieces of the puzzle are slowly coming together, but it’s too late to do anything but fight to the bitter end, whatever it may bring.

Set during one of the bloodiest wars in history, “Of Knights and Dogfights” is the story of the shattered illusions of youth, tyranny and freedom, friendship and love guiding one out of the darkest hell of Soviet captivity.

Midwood deserves a seat at the table with the best the literature world has to offer. I think I’ve read all this author’s books so when this one came out I grabbed a copy. How could I resist when the synopsis starts with “Has it ever occurred to you, Johann; the fact that we’re fighting on the wrong side?” Luring and enticing, the rave accolades for this author’s war-story writing continue with this narrative of interwoven friendships in the worst of times. But it is these relationships that burn from the pages and ignite the storyline with tension. They are real and authentic as are the scenes of war in a time in history noted for the worst crimes against humanity perpetrated by Hitler. Midwood writes with a hand of passion and compassion, not holding back from divulging the human condition with all its shadows. Whereas her last novel took to the frozen ground in Russia, this story takes flight and the infinite possibilities the open skies offer. A different perspective, the author masterfully, brings the scenes to life as four friends in flying school together grow and come to terms with the evils that war brings. And the love. Whereas the scenes that expose the nightmare of the extermination camps ring repulsive the courage of the flying-fighting men gives balance. Characters are real. And flawed. Like the rest of us. The worst of what divides us and best of what unites us as individuals, as peoples, as countries is brilliantly depicted in this devastatingly bloody war. The very prolific Midwood deserves a seat at the table with the best the literature world has to offer. An Important Piece of World War II History Ellie Midwood, expert of World War II historical fiction, has done it again. She’s crafted a gripping, emotional tale about the everyday person who lived through such harrowing times. In Of Knights and Dogfights, we meet two young men just starting flight school, on the verge of the war. More-reserved Johann Brandt and free-spirit Wilhelm “Willi” von Sielaff are roommates at flying school, in addition to Rudi and Walter, two other characters who play lesser roles in novel. Johann and Willi quickly kick it off and become best buddies, having each other’s backs throughout the story.Once the war begins, Johann and Willi are official pilots for the Luftwaffe (the German Air Force). They fight over the English Channel, in North Africa, and even on the awful Eastern Front. Like most young soldiers, they have dreams of glory and honor as fighting men. They are serving their country, believing they were doing something right and good...until the dark truths behind the Nazi Regime creep out between the cracks. Willi, the more outspoken of the two, is especially adamant on where he stands. He hates everything the Nazis stand for. Johann is of a like mind, but he keeps his mouth shut, not wishing to cause trouble.Ellie Midwood does such an amazing job of humanizing who we as readers might at first think of as the enemy, because, after all, Johann and Willi are Germans, and they would have been our (I am American) adversaries during the war had they been real people. What’s clear, and this is historically accurate, is that many of the common soldiers, including those serving in the Luftwaffe, disliked the SS, who were basically Hitler’s power-hungry thugs who worked for him. It’s important to remember that on both sides during a war, the common, everyday soldier is not evil. He (or she) is fighting for their country.Over the course of the story, the innocence of boyhood and childhood dreams is stripped away from both Johann and Willi as they endure the horrors of war, hatred, and persecution. To stand for what’s right in the face of such evil is deeply admirable, and I thank Ellie Midwood for tackling such serious and heavy topics in her books. Of Knights and Dogfights is the fourth book of hers I’ve had the privilege to read and review, and like I say every time, I highly recommend it.Bravo "I know you're grieving. I know you're outraged at such a low, despicable move. So am I. But the action of one rogue pilot can't be set as a precedent for the rest of us to follow."Ms. Midwood brings another powerful masterpiece to the table. Make yourself comfortable, have plenty of snacks, a huge drink, and tissues handy because once you start, you're not going to want to put it down. Make sure you have your life preserver ready because you will be going through a sea of emotion.Ms. Midwood has such a way with words that not only will you feel like you are a part of the story along with her characters, but it also evokes powerful feelings as you read. You'll want to celebrate their victories, smirk at their antics, and mourn with them.On a more serious note, Of Knights and Dogfights also provides several great nuggets to think about. Not everyone in Hitler's Army felt or believed the same as him. Which brings me to the quote I mentioned in the very beginning. Something to think about. People villainize the Nazi Regime, and with good reason. But not everyone is like that, and that is what is refreshing about Ms. Midwood's books. She not only gives you the nitty gritty about the less desirable aspect of that time, but also the glimmer of hope that not every single one of them were so lost.Of Knights and Dogfights follows a group of four friends, dubbed the Four Musketeers. Through their highs and lows. Their comradery that held strong to their more liberal beliefs, even when their country around them was losing their minds. When their opinion was not the "popular" one they were still heroes in ways that could have gotten them thrown in a camp or worse killed. If you've never read anything by Ms. Midwood, this is a perfect start to get you hooked to her work. I would definitely recommend this book.

Book is fabulous. Dissapointed in the extras in the Special Edition. The book is amazing. A complete history of all that is D&D, from it's beginning to today. They have some amazing pics in here. For the long-time D&D fan, this is THE book to own.I have been a HUGE D&D fan almost since the beginning. Growing up in WI, it was always a point of pride that TSR was an hour drive from my house, and GenCon was always "local" to me. When I first saw this book available for pre-order, I put in for my copy. Then the Special Edition was offered, and I changed my order. Now that I have it, I absolutely love the book, and the box is very cool. But the "extras"? Meh.The booklet for Tomb of Horror is really nice for anyone who has played through the original module (and remembers how rough it was). but the "10 poster size prints?" Are you kidding me. 4 8x10, 4 10x16, 1 14x18 and 1 16x24. I'd barely call the 16x24 a "poster", and the rest? Bah.Anyway, I am personally disappointed in the extras. I think the better buy is the book itself, for less than 50% of the price of the Special Edition.Roll a constitution check to stay up and enjoy this Very excellent book! The bonus art/posters have small text bits in the corner that catalogs what the piece is and of what year, the pamphlet features many excellent ideas and nostalgic art (ending with a blurb about a certain sphere that one should avoid touching), and the book is packed with fantastic content between its beautiful cover. (I especially like the book preparing you with a nice blurb from one of our favorite of Jocks Machina, Joe M/Arkhan.) Though the front cover features a beautiful dragon design from Hydra, be sure to check out the other side for something I did not expect for an art back, but found that's what made it perfect! (Spoiler for those who may not be able to give this much cash: It was a mimic!)Whether you buy this or the standard version, you will not be disappointed. I hope you all enjoy this thick tome of knowledge and know the weight behind this fantastic franchise!Terrific book, satisfying special edition Your hands glide across the black embossed cover, its surface smooth but with the slightest tug against your skin. Brilliant gold flashes from the terrifying visage embossed on its front. Slowly, carefully, you lift up the cover to reveal the inside your beautiful special edition. Nestled smugly together with a coterie of prints and a devious convention edition of the Wizard Xagyg' Tomb of Horrors lies what you have long sought.Art & ArcanaA tome worthy of song. Of tribute. Of legend.*** *** ***This is book is a trophy piece. Covered in illustration, wickedly dense with history, and beautifully produced. Despite owning their page limit the authors managed to cram decades worth of wonder, triumph, tears, and rebirth into a single book that somehow manages to capture it all (or close enough!) Every time I wondered if they'd cover something, there it was. What about a page on how Todd Lockwood's dragons from 3rd Edition are the BEST? Two-page spread. What about the Heavy Metal line of miniatures? How about a sequence of the covers of D&D's core books through the ages? Yup. But organized unlike me.If you love D&D buy this book. If you love D&D art buy this book. If you love D&D history buy this book. If you don't, then go try out D&D and then buy this book!
